Did you know, according to an article from the Wall Street Journal, your resume only has six seconds to make an impression? With this information, it is easy to recognize that, more than ever, it is imperative that your resume stands out. Today, we’d like to chat about what is happening in the current job economy to help manage expectations and how our team can help.

As reported by an article from FlexJobs, it takes 3-6 months on average to find a job, with a 8.3% probability of getting a job interview from one job application. Furthermore, that could mean it takes as many as 10-20 applications to secure and interview and could take 10-15 interviews to receive one job offer.

The Current Economy

A recent article from TD Canada highlights exactly what is happening in the current economy. Let’s point out a few key points from their findings:

  • The Canadian job market will continue to cool. However, climbing unemployment rates will be mostly driven by still solid growth in labour supply as opposed to a mass deterioration in hiring.
  • Some public sector industries are tight, and private sector hiring has slowed over the past several months.
  • Growth in wages is still running too hot, but is forecasted to moderate as employment slows, unemployment tracks higher, and job vacancies decline more.
  • Alberta should outperform as still decent employment growth is better equipped to keep up with the labour force gains.

In a report from ATB’s The Owl, they post the question that is at the forefront of many minds: “can Alberta’s labour market churn out jobs at the rate people are coming to the province and entering the labour force? Afterall, Alberta leads all provinces in population growth, driven by record interprovincial migration.”

As we continue to see an influx of people coming to Alberta, and an increased demand for jobs, it is imperative to be prepared for a competitive market. It is also essential to have realistic expectations, as the process may take longer than expected, due to the current state of elevated competition for highly sought after employment.

How can we help?

The best way for you to be ready to apply to positions as they arise, is to be sure your resume exceeds employer standards. The team at Resumes with Results want to help you stand out.

Rather than submitting a templated chronological resume, which looks like every other resume, choose to work with our team to build a skills-based resume. Chronological resumes tend to list essentials, which makes you just another applicant with the same generic history as everyone else. On the other hand, skills-based resumes better capture your skills, abilities, knowledge, and experience. This information adds immediate value to the reader and makes you a better choice to interview. While a chronological resume can feature added skills, it is not the same as a true skills-based resume.

Your resume is an investment in your future and your success. A templated, generic, cookie cutter resume is not going to impress, or get you to the top of the pile when applying for a high demand position. Not only will our skills-based resumes help set you apart, but your resume will be well equipped to pass the discerning eye of the Applicant Tracking Systems (ATS).

When your resume has merely six seconds to make an impact, you want to ensure yours makes a strong and lasting impression. If you would like assistance with your resume, our team would love the opportunity to work with you. Give us a call today, and let’s get started.
