It is hard to believe that we are midway through November and fast approaching the new year. Since 2024 will be here before we know it, soon we will be immersed in the holiday season. Last week, we discussed the topic of layoffs and if you find yourself in this situation or are considering a career change as we begin a new year, now is the perfect time to get your resume ready.

Every industry is different, so there isn’t necessarily a perfect formula for when you should apply for a new job. Depending on your circumstances, you may have no choice in the matter but to hit the ground running and start submitting your resume. However, for some, you may have the opportunity to consider different options as to when the best time to submit your resume is. If so, this will allow you to take advantage of the months that are more likely to help land your next job.

The new year often encourages a fresh start. People begin to make new goals for themselves, both professionally and personally, rethink their values and priorities, and feel a sense of rejuvenation as they celebrate a new chapter ahead. Therefore, the early months of the year can be an advantageous time to apply for jobs. According to an article by Business News Daily, Marketing Manager Valerie Streif states the following, “During the transition into the new year and into early February, this is when teams are getting new momentum [and] adding on new members to accomplish their goals when a business is growing.”

As people consider their current role as the year comes to an end, and contemplate seeking out new opportunities, this opens the door and creates more openings for others. Often, companies complete their budgets in October and November, post jobs in December, and then plan to hire in January or February as described by Shane Green in Business News Daily.

The holiday season often brings additional stress, people take more time off work, and are focused on wrapping up current projects, which means they aren’t necessarily prioritizing new hires. Therefore, it is beneficial to use this time to ensure you are ready to tackle the job market once 2024 rings in.

Update or have a skills-based resume crafted with your goals and expertise, spruce up your LinkedIn profile, practice your interview skills, and reach out to your network for any opportunities they may have insight into. Since the upcoming season often means more social gatherings, take advantage of these events to talk to other professionals in, or related to, your field.

In terms of the best day to submit your resume, there are some that might garner better results than others. Since most people hit the ground running at the start of the week, more resumes are received on Monday. Therefore, it might be more beneficial to consider submitting your resume on Tuesday or Wednesday once the initial inundation of resumes has subsided.
