December has officially arrived! Life is getting busier, the hustle and bustle of the holiday season is upon us, and, in many instances, time seems to speed up this month. However, in one case, there may be a slower pace for opportunities that arise. While you may think that businesses and organizations aren’t actively hiring over the holidays, this is not always the case. Perhaps taking advantage of this quieter time, might mean seizing a perfect opportunity.

Let us discuss more in detail.

You have likely heard the statement, “timing is everything” and this is certainly true when searching for a job. Many businesses become extremely busy throughout the holiday season and are looking for extra hands to help.

While these may be entry level jobs, this is a great opportunity to get your foot in the door and make an impression that could lead to advancement.

In other instances, business may slow down during the month of December. This means hiring managers may have more time and will be quicker to get back to you.

If you have the contact information of someone within an industry you are interested in, consider reaching out to them during December to discuss employment opportunities.

December might also mean less competition. While we certainly want you to enjoy the holiday season with your friends and family, we also encourage you to spend a few hours each day to continue your job hunt. Whether it be to send emails, place or return phone calls, or work on your resume; use this time to your advantage.

With fewer people on the hunt, your chances to stand out increase, giving you a competitive edge. When you disperse your resume in December, this may open the opportunity for you to be invited for an interview in January. For many businesses, the fiscal year concludes at the end of the year, and many begin advertising for job postings in early January. When the posting goes out in January, they will be inundated with applications. If you are interested in working for a specific company, use this month to market yourself.

Don’t be afraid to make a few phone calls or submit your resume as this shows your enthusiasm and makes an excellent impression. Most companies appreciate unsolicited resumes as it shows the applicant is interested in working with that company rather than looking for any job.

We hope that we have given you some food for thought as you continue your job search journey over the month of December.

As always, we are here to help you at any time with your resume. If you have questions or are ready to revamp your resume, please contact us!
