Last week, we discussed common fears associated with your job search and offered tips on how to help overcome those feelings. One key fear many people have when it comes time to search for a job, or when currently employed, is the fear of advancement. In many cases, people can feel stuck, or under-qualified for a position, which holds them back from moving up in their career. It is often easier to stay where you are comfortable, or where you feel you are best suited. Today, we would like to chat about the importance of recognizing your value, and why you should not be afraid to seek a higher position.
Employment is like a ladder. Just as you move up a ladder one step at a time, the same can be said for your job. Everything, including your career, moves in stages. However, we can often get overwhelmed when looking at the big picture (or climbing to the very top of the ladder). So, instead, we encourage our clients to take their job search journey one step at a time. This way, they are less likely to be overwhelmed, or suffer from imposter syndrome.
If you are unfamiliar with the term, imposter syndrome, this is when you feel like you are not suited for something because you lack all the necessary skills that one would expect you to have. Those who suffer from imposter syndrome doubt their qualifications, think they are not as capable as others, and fear that they will be exposed as a fraud. It can be challenging to overcome these feelings. But remember that everyone is meant to advance, and you should not let anyone, including yourself, get in the way of your success.
Working closely with our clients, we can uncover the skills and expertise you have developed in your current, and previous positions to leverage your value. Skills learned can be transferred to other positions. You are continuously learning new skills, which will allow you to move further up the ladder.
We often suggest to our clients that if you have six out of the ten skills in a job posting, put your name in the running. Our skills-based resumes allow us to elaborate further, using the skills you have, along with your successes and accomplishments to showcase you as an asset.
We do not want anyone to feel stuck in the position they are in. While you may have the desire to achieve more, sometimes you need a little push. When you work with our team, we will do that for you (figuratively speaking, of course!). We want you to realize that your existing skills are valuable, and they can help open a door to new opportunities.
When you take a chance, what is the worst that can happen? You fail. We know this sounds terrifying, but it is truly not the end of the world, or your career. But what happens when you take that chance, and you succeed? You are filled with accomplishment and excitement. That is why taking this journey one step at a time is so important!
No matter what your goals are, we are here to help you achieve them. If you have been thinking about advancing in your career, but are not sure where to start, we would love the opportunity to sit down with you and discuss.
So, are you ready to start climbing your own ladder?
